The Old Line State

Rooted in History...

Maryland’s nickname, “The Old Line State,” traces back to the American Revolution and the extraordinary reputation of the Maryland Line, a Continental Army Regiment known for their discipline, resilience, and unwavering courage. These soldiers earned national admiration early in the war, especially at the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776. During this battle, General Washington was in retreat. He needed to move his forces back to Pennsylvania and regroup - or the Revolution would be over.

However, to retreat, without his fledgling army being slaughtered, he needed the Maryland Regiment to hold off the line of the advancing British troops. The Maryland Regiment faced overwhelming British forces. Despite the odds, they repeatedly charged the British to protect the rest of the Continental Army. In the process the Maryland Regiment suffered devastating losses - approximately 75% of the regiment was killed.

The actions of what became known as the "Maryland 400", prevented a catastrophic defeat of George Washington and helped preserve the Revolution in its earliest and most vulnerable days. Their sacrifice is remembered as a defining act of bravery that helped preserve the fledgling American army - and the cause of independence itself.

Guided by Principal...

Throughout the war, the Maryland Line became known as some of the most dependable troops in the Continental Army. They fought in nearly every major northern battle and later in the brutal southern campaigns. Their steadfastness - holding the line when others could not - is what many historians believe led General George Washington to give Maryland's Regiment the name “The Old Line”. The nickname became a symbol of honor, grit, and reliability that Marylanders have carried with pride for more than two centuries.

Driven by Legacy...

Over time, “Old Line” has grown beyond its military origin to represent the character of Maryland itself - strong, steady, and deeply rooted in tradition. It speaks to a heritage of standing firm through adversity, doing things the right way, and honoring the land and the people who came before us, and fighting for those that will come after us.

At Old Line Prime, we chose this name because it reflects the values we strive to uphold every day on our farm - quality, integrity, and a commitment to doing right by our animals, our land, and our customers. Just as the Maryland Line earned its reputation through consistent excellence, we aim to carry that same spirit forward in the beef we raise and the stewardship we practice.
